I am a big fan of creating memorable environments. Every once in a while, I think there is great value in putting thought and effort into a look that is unique and out-of-the-ordinary. It has the potential to shake people out of the dozy state that many of us wander around in and cause them to engage – or better yet, pull out their phone, take a photo and post it to social media, inviting their friends to church.
We once did a series about biblical parables and The Psalms that we called “Songwriters and Storytellers.” We were looking for a more intimate feel for the services, so we pulled out a grand piano and opted for something different than our normal LED lighting. All of the lamps in the photo [there were actually more spread around the stage] were purchased at Goodwill. It was a striking – and very inexpensive – look for that series, engaging and effective.
