Leaders: Do NOT hoard information.
Let’s be honest – as humans, we sometimes like to have the “inside scoop.” We like to know and/or decide what’s happening because it gives us a feeling of power and/or security and/or control.
I have found that the actual number of things that really must function on a “need to know basis only” is often quite small – it may be (hopefully unconsciously) that we feel that widening the number of people in the loop makes us less special…
Here’s the truth… People need information to do their jobs. They need to know what is coming up so that they can prepare for it. The further out, the better. So communicate, communicate, communicate…
P.S. This is ESPECIALLY true of deadlines.
