A course correction for those who need it…
Never treat volunteers as if they are doing you a personal favor by serving – even if it’s the ”above and beyond” kind of serving. That doesn’t mean not to show appreciation – it just means consistently casting vision for the “why” behind doing what they do.
Remind people that their service moves the ministry of the church (and through it, fulfills the Great Commandment and the Great Commission), rather than just gets YOU out of a jam.
As a leader, you should definitely care about and for your team members, but if their primary motivation is their relationship with you, things are very out of focus – and you’re the one who let it get that way…
