Church leaders – a potentially tough pill for you to swallow today. Unless there is an actual emergency or an absolutely critical change to be made, DO NOT text your Production Team volunteers or staff during a service. When you do that, you are pulling their focus AWAY from the service. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that most of you are doing it maliciously – in your minds, I’m sure that you’re “just tweaking” the service trying to make it better.
Let me give you an example of why it’s a bad idea. An important position on the weekend (run by volunteers in most churches) is “CGs.” In the simplest terms, that’s the person who is bringing up the lyrics during worship songs, and is in many cases bringing up sermon notes and Scriptures during the message (as well as videos, announcements slides, etc…). Texting – or, worse yet, coming up and talking to – that person breaks their concentration and can often CREATE a problem, causing them to lose their place or bring up slides late. You may say “Nah, I never do that,” but I bet you do, and, if not you, it’s someone else. I’ve even caught myself doing it, and I very much know better…
Many strongly noticeable “biffs” are caused by well-meaning leaders trying to solve minor problems. I’ll talk tomorrow about what to do instead…
P.S. NEVER, EVER text an “idea” during the service (for all of the reasons mentioned above). If you can’t wait until after the service (or – better yet – during the upcoming week) to share your creative thoughts, you likely have a problem with patience and/or self-control…
