I saw a post yesterday by Jonathan Malm for church staff members tired out from Easter services: “Christmas isn’t far away…” It actually made me laugh out loud because it’s one of those things that’s funny because it’s true. Services happen every week, and need to for overwhelmingly obvious reasons. This is our calling – it’s what we do.
So, what’s next? What are your goals for the remainder of this year as a church? If most pastors and church leaders were honest with themselves, the answer might very well be “Huh?” Or perhaps “survival…” Tell you what, let’s dial down the over-dramatization a bit. With the exception of the previous 30 years or so, it is easier to do ministry than it has been in the history of the world. With a halfway decent work ethic, and a bit of focus, it’s just not that difficult…
Writing down what you want to be different about the church/the congregation/yourself by the end of the year is a good first step in a positive direction. It causes you to break out of the reactionary mindset that so many churches have as their standard operating procedure. So do that – right now. Pull out a piece of paper – write down your top 3 goals – and put it somewhere on your desk where you’ll see it every day. Don’t type it on your computer or phone, it’s too easy to simply ignore the note or file.
We’ll talk in the days ahead about what to do next…
