I found this on a page from small devotional magazine that I’ve had in my closet for years (sorry, I don’t know the author):
“When faced with the real opportunity to change for the better, it’s not uncommon for people to choose the familiar pain over an unfamiliar new and better life. Fear like that happens when we realize what God really could do…God won’t help halfway.”
If we’re honest with ourselves, we know it’s true. We say we want healing from a sin pattern, but what we really want is for God to take away the RESULTS of our sin, and leave the sin itself in place. It doesn’t work like that…
We in the church are not immune, and perhaps lie to ourselves even more than unbelievers. We’re so used to putting on the veneer of holiness that we’ve started believing it. But only God is holy. ONLY God is holy.
The evangelical church has and still does incredible things in our world. Christian giving accounts for more than 70% of ALL American giving, and outpaces the government in addressing global poverty (according to Barna Research). But one thing that we’ve lost is our time of corporate confession – consequently, we’ve lost a sense of how sinful we really are.
Let’s reverse that pattern now. Stop whatever you’re doing at this moment and confess your sin to God. And then LISTEN to what He puts in your heart to do about it!
