I heard a question the other day that made me pause: “When was the last time that you did something for the first time?” I’m past the halfway point of my life, and know first-hand that it’s very easy to simply “go with what I know works.”
However, the world is not a static place. It changes, and so do we. It’s only when we break out of our patterns that we grow. Believe it or not, I did not start eating guacamole until I was over 40 years old. Now I love it (a bit too much)I For years, I had taken a look at that pile of green goo and thought “eewww,” never imagining how good it could be. But I finally decided to give it a try and “woo hoo!”
Don’t get me wrong – some things absolutely need to stay the same. Our ideals. Our faith. But NOT our methods. As a consultant, I see too many churches that might as well put their methods in their statement of belief – they are WAY too attached to their service times, or kids curriculum, or the event that they’ve been doing for twenty years, with less and less engagement each time…
So, give it a shot. Try a new way of doing things. Put some worn-out ideas to rest. Look at everything you do with new eyes. I’ll give some ideas of how to make it happen in the upcoming days.
