Fighting the “We” vs “They”

As church leaders, we of course say that ministry is the job of EVERY Christian – that God has designed each of us with something that the rest of us need. However, our actions sometimes tell a different story. Ask yourself honestly – are there things in the church that you are doing that could be done as effectively (or perhaps even MORE effectively) by a member of the congregation. Do you simply default to covering a lot of bases because it’s easier than training people up? Are you afraid to make the ask? Or does it go deeper than that? Do you like being the “expert” or the person who saves the day?

Even our language often reinforces this mindset. You would be amazed at how many times church websites and people speaking from church platforms use the word “we” to refer to the pastors and church staff. That creates an unhealthy dichotomy and you end up with the people in your own congregations referring to their own church as “they.” That’s not the way the church is meant to be.

Words are powerful – think through how you communicate the church’s identity and each person’s part in it. More in the days ahead… #creativeworshipideas
