Your True and Rightful Title

I am a big goal setter. I love checklists. Like many others with a similar temperament, I will actually add items I’ve already done to my lists, just so that I can have the satisfaction of checking them off.

At home, many times our goals are designed to care for our family and make our lives better/easier/more comfortable. For church staff and volunteer leaders, there needs to be a different focus – serving God and His people.

It’s not as simple as it sounds, especially for church staffers. The fact that church is both our job and our mission can muddy the waters quite a bit. The sad truth is that you may take a hit for goals that are others-focused. Relentless self-promotion is part of our culture and is expected, even in the church world. Humility, in particular, is a Christ-like trait that is quite rare – and can have consequences.

So what to do? Take the hit. Tone down the self-promotion. It’s not easy, not at all, but the self-centered life is ultimately self-defeating. Anything that we gain through posturing is temporary, or – more likely – an illusion. Make sure that your goals are in line with your true and rightful title: servant.
