I “beat up” on pastors and church leaders quite a bit. The reason? It’s quite literally my job. Pastors/church leaders hire me to tell them the truth. For instance, when I “secret shop” a church, part of what I do is point out areas of weakness (although I point out strengths, as well).
Pastors realize that they don’t always hear the straight up truth from their staff or congregations (sometimes they do, lol). They also know that sometimes they’re too close to see issues, or may have simply become accustomed to them.
However, let me pause from critique for a moment and give some encouragement. Even in the midst of our hyper-critical world where it seems that there are many just ready to pounce at any sign of weakness – good happens. I have worked alongside pastors for many years, and have seen countless hours and dedicated effort spent guiding, counseling, nurturing, and sharing God’s wisdom with those that He has placed in their care.
Take heart, my friends. Pastors, church leaders, you’re not perfect. Neither am I. But that’s OK. Our Boss is.
