The Quest for the Golden Ticket

We’re always looking for the Golden Ticket…

The one idea, strategy, staff member, etc… that will change everything and eliminate all of our problems. I can relate. Sometimes I just want to get to the point where the issues are all resolved, and I can relax (plus “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” was my favorite movie when I was a kid).

Here’s the problem with the Golden Ticket: It doesn’t exist.

It’s like dieting. It’s simple, really. You lose weight by taking in less calories than you burn. There are different ways to limit calories and burn more, but, in the end, that’s what has to happen. The same is true of any sort of church work. It is going to take trust in God and ongoing effort over a prolonged period. Ultimately, it will never be done (just our part in it will). We try to find some sort of way around that truth and hope that there’s a “secret way,” but there’s not.

When we remove the drama caused by the quest for the Golden Ticket, we realize that things aren’t really as hard as we’re making them out to be. We can get a lot done when we don’t spend all of our effort trying to get around working…
