Start Where You’re At

You can’t plot a route to get somewhere if you don’t know where you’re at now…

Churches often have lofty aspirations. That’s as it should be – they’re churches and they have some of the most important business to take care of on this earth! However, wishing something was true doesn’t make it so.

Don’t confuse aspirational goals with realities. Similarly, don’t talk to your congregation and/or staff team as if your goals have already come to pass. One of the main jobs of the leader is to honestly define where things are – and THEN cast a compelling vision of where they need to be. I do “secret shoppers” with churches to help them do just that. This isn’t a pitch, though – ultimately, it’s up to you to find out what’s actually happening. Even if what you find is disappointing. Or painful…

The good news is that once you identify reality, you can start working to move things in a better direction. You can add a midweek rehearsal to help the worship team. You can get your sermon done by Wednesday, rather than Saturday night. You can start working on an actual plan to fix the pothole in the parking lot that’s popped three tires this year.

You may be surprised at how much momentum you’ll build – and how much better you’ll feel – once you get started.
