Looking Up

How do you spot first-time guests at church? They look up. It’s a normal human reaction to being in a new place – we size up our environment. I heard that years ago (in “Simply Strategic Stuff,” if memory serves), and it’s true, I’ve checked. I’ve also noticed that I stop looking up when I’m used to a place (take a gander upwards the next time that you go to the grocery store, you may be surprised by things there that you never notice – like I was recently).

Interesting, but why does this matter?

Your Guest Services team (or whatever you’ve named it) should know this. They should have all the tools and training that they can at their disposal. This is EXTRA true as they are trained to interact with and assist first-timers. Help them to understand the “wins” in their role – one of which is to help guide and assist those who are in your church building for the first time in a friendly and caring way. Keeping an eye out for newbies – especially those looking up – will help them to do their job well.
