Skills

Don’t neglect your skills or you’ll lose them.

One of the sad (but potentially joyful) realities of becoming more, shall we say, “seasoned,” is that you realize that your various skills – physical, intellectual, musical, etc… don’t last unless you invest time and effort to keep them well-honed.

It’s not just that you’re getting older and slower, although there is some of that. Actually, it’s simply the way things should be. You have different priorities. You could obsess over music (or production, or video, or writing, etc…) and spent 98% of your time on it, like you did in the old days. But now, there are a lot of other things in life taking precedence – your family likely topping the list.

Don’t worry – you don’t have to give up doing the things you love. Just be strategic. Focus your efforts on the elements that are important. Double-task (ex. do guitar warmups to keep your fingers limber while listening to a podcast). Eliminate useless social media scrolling and ignore the rage-bait on X/Threads/etc…

One of the most important things? Develop a PLAN instead of winging your way through life. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish when you have a clear idea of what it is that you’re trying to achieve.
