Really Knowing

A quick (but potentially uncomfortable) question for a Friday,,,

Worship Pastors, do your vocalists know what they’re singing? Do you?

Songs are key tools that we use to lead our congregations in worship, and knowing them well is essential to doing our best in that task.

There are two sides to “knowing” a song: memorization and understanding. If you are relying on confidence monitors to get through a song, you haven’t done your homework. To be able to express a song well you can’t be struggling – musically or lyrically – to get through it.

It’s also highly unlikely that you have internalized what the song is trying to express if you’re fixated on the monitors. Sadly, this is a step that’s often missing. Even when a vocalist or team have successfully “performed” the song, they sometimes can’t tell you what the song is about – the truth or the emotion that the song was designed to convey…

Lastly, don’t overdramatize – it’s not that hard to prep well. Very few teams lead more than one new song per weekend – that should be well within the range of what can be memorized and understood. IF you’re putting in the proper work… #creativeworshipideas
