As Iron Sharpens Iron

I’ve had several high quality mentors. Individuals who have been instrumental in helping me grow, personally and professionally. They’ve taught and guided me, but also pushed me, sometimes hard. The best mentors or bosses I’ve had have not just been supportive – they’ve also been challenging, occasionally extremely so.

When I’ve been in a self-pitying mood, I sometimes felt like they were asking too much. In my worst moments, I thought that I was just as smart as they were, so why put up with it? Here’s why – they had something that I didn’t: experience. They were preparing me for the real world – a world that was sometimes difficult, confusing, and even damaging. A world in which I was NOT the main character…

We know inside ourselves whether we’re growing or not. Good mentors help that growth, forcing us to deal with the real world – off the couch and away from our phones. If you’ve been blessed with one (or more), thank God for them right now. If you need one, start looking – they are out there, and can make all the difference…
