Rick Muchow once wrote that those of us who serve “on the platform” need guardrails to keep our pride in check, or else our weekly worship service can derail and become a “serve us.” That’s not just a cute play on words.
Truth be told, I’ve known worship leaders over the years who were straight up divas. They would chafe at any menial task because it was beneath them [or “not in their job description”]. They felt that they were there to be served, rather than to serve. Sadly, they aren’t the only ones. Senior/Lead Pastors can have egos that make it difficult to believe that their head will fit in the church building. So can anyone else in authority if pride reigns unchecked…
As pastors, directors, etc…, we are called to lead by example. Our teams are not there to “boss around” and handle all of the tasks that we don’t feel like doing. They’re to be led with compassion and respect – along with a good helping of humility.
“Thank God that you have been blessed with a team who will walk with you through (and periodically create some of!) the mess of ministry.” – Mark DeVries and Nate Stratman
