Being Formed

“We read the Bible not to be informed, but to be formed.” I don’t recall where I heard that, but it’s a statement of truth that I have found to be accurate time and time again. God is constantly shaping us into the people we need to be. If I’m honest with myself, I have to admit that I’ve forgotten that. Many times. MANY times.

You see, those of us in full-time church work can sometimes forget that we’re not “done.” After all, we’re the paid professionals. The experts. We are the people that others turn to for leadership, answers, and guidance. Three problems, though:

  1. We’re not as smart as we think we are.
  2. Things change, requiring adaptation.
  3. Our tanks don’t stay full.

You don’t learn to play an instrument in a day: it takes years. You’re not able to play an instrument because you really love music: you’re able to play because you’ve spent minute after minute, hour after hour developing the skill. And it’s not like riding a bike. If you don’t practice – every day – you will gradually lose the skill.

“Continual Learner” is a VERY good thing to have as a character trait. More in the days ahead…
