A worship leader’s main job is not to sing. If it were, they would simply be referred to as singers.
Their job is much, much more important than that.
It’s also very simple. Their job is to lead people in worship.
Don’t mistake me – i didn’t say the job is easy. It’s just not complicated to understand. As God’s creations, our job is to worship Him. Regardless of how we feel, regardless of what’s going on in the world, and regardless of whether or not that very same world lives up to our standards of perfection. Our job is to worship. A worship leader’s role is to help that happen.
The distinction is critical. Singing is one of the ways HOW. But it’s not the WHAT (our worship) or, more importantly, the WHY (because God is worthy).
Keeping the focus first and foremost on the WHY helps all of the other less critical pieces to fall into place. In Psalm 29:2, God gives us a reminder: “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”
