It’s Work

There’s always the joke (?) of people asking pastors what they do during the week… Most people simply have no comprehension of the hours of planning, preparation and implementation that it takes to make weekend worship services happen. For churches with a high production emphasis, it’s even trickier. Stage shows and concert tours spend months preparing and do the same show over and over again. Churches have a different service every week – it’s basically a continuing cycle of plan, implement and review, plan, implement, review, etc… with multiple different services always in various stages of production.

I’ve had three “career paths” in my life – I worked in business as a corporate buyer, I was a teacher for 5 years, and I’ve been a creative arts pastor for about 15 years. This is by far the hardest of the three. There needs to be a strong work ethic just to survive, much less to do a good job for any length of time. The great thing about it is that we have God’s help in what we do, if we ask, and hopefully the blessing of being able to see that life change that can occur – it’s not a trite answer, it’s the honest truth. It’s when we forget that that things get really difficult. It’s my prayer for you that God offer reminders throughout this season.
