I wrote recently about the need for variety in who is leading worship from our platforms. Today, I’m going to talk to you senior pastors…
I am a firm believer that there needs to be one primary preaching voice for a church. The congregation needs to like and/or trust you. In addition, they need to be able to tolerate the music and know that their kids are taken care of well, but the preacher is the primary church touch point in most people’s lives. That being said, if you are the only one who EVER preaches [minus a vacation week here and there], your church will be in SERIOUS trouble when you retire, or if something happens to you.
If your congregation won’t let you take time off, that’s a problem. If YOU won’t take time off, that’s a different kind of problem. In either case, you need to resolve that to have a healthy church. I am sure that you are a wise individual, but one person’s wisdom only goes so far. Plus, sometimes you can bring in an “expert” on a particular topic or section of the Bible that will help your congregation to go deeper. P.S. You don’t have to announce in advance if you’re going to be gone for a weekend…
