Perpetual distraction is not a good thing. No offense to Apple watches, but I sometimes find them very annoying when they are on the wrists of people that I’m meeting with. The owners seem unable to control the urge to look when something comes in. Phones are even worse. Ask yourself how much you are on your phone each day (or better yet, track it – honestly). Then determine how much of that screen time actually had some sort of productive purpose. When your technology becomes your master (instead of your tool), you’re not in a good place…
Part of how that damages you is that it screams for attention – you behave like an addict because you ARE one. You work for a little bit – probably very little – and then are drawn back to it. The texts, the games, and – worst of all – the social media. You waste tremendous amounts of time on things that don’t matter at all, pushing aside things that do – like your work and your family.
It’s not just you. It’s all of us. By design. It’s MEANT to be addictive. So understand that and fight it. It’s a sad truth, but the ability to actually focus on something for a period of time has become a trait that will help you to stand out. Don’t work for 15 minutes and “recover” for 45. Discipline yourself to focus and complete a task (if possible) before moving on. More in the days to come…
