Things to Do and Places to Go

Now that I am somewhat more seasoned [ie old], I’m able to reflect back a bit. I’ve experienced some incredible things, far more than I would have ever thought possible when I was young. There’s been deep joy and heart-wrenching pain, fulfilling busyness and drudgery/boredom. Looking back, I start to get a glimpse of God’s plan and perhaps a bit of why I’m here. I am thankful for all that has happened to shape my life, and the days that have gone by.

However, I am also bound and determined not to live in the past. My job here is not done, and won’t be until I draw my last breath. There are things to do, places to go, and – most of all – people to walk alongside of as they travel on their own journeys. My prayer for them – and myself – is that we would ever stay in “learning mode.” That we would seek to grow as people and make the world around us better, in the big things, but also in the little day-to-day actions. The actions that make up a life…

“In the central place of every heart there is a recording chamber. So long as it receives a message of beauty, hope, cheer and courage – so long are you young. When the wires are all down and our heart is covered with the snow of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then – and only then – are you grown old.” Douglas MacArthur
