“Status quo.” It’s a phrase that many, if not most, leaders want to distance themselves from. Why? Because it’s generally a codeword for “stuck.”
Here’s the problem… Churches are absolutely expert in maintaining the status quo. It’s one of the things we do best. Why? Fear of change. We’ve made changes in the past, and had a bad result. Consequently, we continually develop imaginary scenarios where we make a minor change and everything falls apart.
A truth about life is that sometimes things need to change. Eating pizza every other meal is (possibly) survivable in your 20s – not so much in your 50s+. Strategies that worked at church in the past may be the very thing holding you back now. As I work with churches, it’s the courage to actually try things that often stands out when looking at the effective ministry teams.
Don’t change just to change – that simply means you’re bored and/or immature. But be honest with yourself and change the things that NEED to be changed.
You may do it wrong. There may be a bad result. What then? Try again…
