One of the most misguided mindsets I see in volunteers [and church staff] is the idea that they are “just” a volunteer, or “only” work in a small church, etc… While humility is a good trait, this is different – it’s a sense that somewhere “real” ministry is happening, but whatever that individual is involved in is a support role – not front lines.
Constantly remind your team of the stakes – at the very least, they are helping to plant seeds. We’re not talking the temporary well-being of someone, we are talking about their eternal destiny. Although it is ultimately in God’s hands, not ours, we are called through the Great Commission to let people know of God’s love for them. By serving as volunteer or staff, we invade the world with the truth – what more noble cause could someone spend their life on?
