Day 10 of “12 Days Of Weekend Service New Year’s Resolutions!” Today’s resolution is “Be Prepared.” If you were ever a Boy Scout, you know that their motto is “Be Prepared.” One of the scouting websites defined the phrase as meaning that “you are ready, willing, and able to do what is necessary in any situation that comes along.” It would be a great motto for church teams, as well – especially the worship and production teams. Every church should have emergency first aid kits available, but you should also have a “Worship Team Emergency Survival Kit.”
Said kit should include:
Guitar Strings – several sets of acoustic and electric
Bass Strings
Various Batteries [particularly 9volt]
A Guitar Tuner
An Extra Guitar Strap
Various ¼” Cables [including very short ones for effects]
A Capo
Several Very Small Screwdrivers And Allen Wrenches
A String Winder
Various Guitar Picks
Various Drumsticks
Spare Drumheads [and a spare snare, if possible]
An Extra Keyboard Pedal
Etc…
Ideally, a church would also have a backup basic-level electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass and keyboard, along with some wired mics [SM58, etc…] in case of wireless issues. Long story short, you may not need them [and most conscientious players will bring many of these things themselves], but better safe than sorry – particularly at 8:45 on a Sunday morning. #creativeworshipideas
Be prepared with a weekend service “first aid” kit.
Hmmm - well, let's see...
I'm a Christian, a husband, a dad, a son, a pastor, a consultant, a musician, a writer, and bits and pieces of a bunch of other things. My work life has followed three main phases - business to teaching to church. I was the Weekend Services Pastor for nine years at Northview Church, an awesome church in the Indianapolis suburbs. I used to work for Willow Creek, another awesome church in the Chicago area. Plus I've written for various magazines and websites, and other freelancy sorts of things... My life mission is to help the church be as excellent as it can be.
Oh yeah - the name's Greg. Greg Wallace. But not the race car driver or the major league pitcher or the British celebrity chef. Just the creative worship guy. Hi.
It's my hope that these ideas, musings, rants, raves, etc... will inspire you. They're just my opinions - but again, I hope that they'll help to inspire you. Because the church really, really needs inspired creative types. If you're a creative type (and most people are, deep-down), ask God for help. Then take any ideas that are useful to you - borrow them, nab them, use them, adapt them - and make them into something greater...
