Let’s play a little game of “What If.” What if the male vocalist that you had planned to lead a song [or the whole worship set] wakes up with stomach flu? In that same scenario, what if every other available vocalist on the worship team that weekend is female?

Two things: 1) Always have a backup vocalist who knows the melody, and 2) Be ready to change the key. Don’t just memorize the song, memorize the structure – that will enable you to keep things going, even in a fairly serious “punt” situation. Capo, if you have to – in fact, it’ll be easier for guitarists [who can capo] and for keyboardists [who can hit pitch transpose], than for poor bass players like me…

Be prepared for “what if” scenarios…
