Something To Actually Lead

Leadership can be tricky. Leading leaders can be even trickier. True leaders simply won’t tolerate high levels of micro-management, nor will they be happy simply implementing – they are going to want a lane to run in, something to actually lead.

Here’s what I’ve found to be effective… Give a sense of where things need to end up and then get out of the way. Don’t try to map out every step – have a high level of accountability, focus on results and let your leaders figure out how to get there.

An article by Jim Collins contained a book review describing IBM’s reinvention of itself – it hit the point pretty well: “In a culture of bureaucracy, people have little freedom and lots of rules. In a culture of discipline, people have lots of freedom within a framework of responsibilities and values.” #creativeworshipideas
