Interim leader. A very tricky position, but one that happens in the church world all the time – perhaps more than you might think. For the temporary leader to be successful in his or her position, a number of questions must be answered:

1. Who makes what decisions?

2. Where does the buck stop?

3. Is the interim leader supposed to help the culture change in preparation for the permanent leader, or is he or she continuing what has gone on before?

4. And the most important question: Is the interim leader a potential candidate for the permanent position?

Clarity in role, expectations – and future possibilities – will help everything to flow smoothly and avoid any hard feelings at the end of the run…
