I read this today:

“The only way for the leader of a team to create a safe environment for his team members to be vulnerable is by stepping up and doing something that feels unsafe and uncomfortable first. By getting naked before anyone else, by taking the risk of making himself vulnerable with no guarantee that other members of the team will respond in kind, a leader demonstrates an extraordinary level of selflessness and dedication to the team. And that gives him the right, and the confidence, to ask others to do the same.”
Patrick Lencioni, The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else In Business

I have found this to be completely true, whether it’s a senior church leader with staff, or a worship or production leader with their volunteer teams. The part that is key is the part about no guarantees that the team will respond in kind. Many of them have opened up to people in some way and have gotten burned. I have, many times, and I’m sure you have, as well. However, your team is dead-ended if there is no trust – without trust you will never be more than a positional leader [ie someone who “leads” because someone else gave you a title]. You have to trust [and show yourself to be trustworthy] to be trusted. So – get out there and take that chance that you will be burned – and start leading.

Show trust to earn trust
